Govt has failed in economic performance during Q1: Isaan Poll

By Thai Newsroom Reporters

THE PHEU THAI-LED GOVERNMENT was recently viewed by most northeastern people to have ultimately failed in economic performance during the first quarter of this year, according to the Isaan Poll released over the weekend.

The latest opinion poll conducted by Khon Kaen University’s Faculty of Economics with a total of 1,100 people from all walks of life in all 20 Isaan provinces has found the Pheu Thai-led government only scoring 32 out of a total 100 in economic performance between last January and March.

That compared to 33 out of 100 which the current coalition government under the Pheu Thai-endorsed Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin was found to have scored during last October and December.

Major economic issues which most of the Isaan respondents would prefer the government prioritise in addressing included an increase in daily minimum wage, a large-scale stimulation of domestic consumption and the Pheu Thai-initiated, populist handout campaign, also known as the 10,000-baht digital wallet project.

Meanwhile, the Isaan Poll has found 40% of the respondents say they considered the ruling Pheu Thai as the most popular party whilst 47% say they viewed the opposition Move Forward as the most popular.

The Pheu Thai under de facto party boss-cum-convict on parole Thaksin Shinawatra got 73 out of a total of 132 constituency-based MPs representing the Isaan region in last year’s general election.

That compared to only 1 – 2% popularity of coalition partners, namely the Bhumjaithai under de facto party boss Newin Chidchob, the Palang Pracharath led by former deputy prime minister Prawit Wongsuwan and the Ruam Thai Sang Chart under de facto party boss/former coup leader-turned-prime minister/now privy councillor Prayut Chan-o-cha.
