Dad heartbroken after speeding cop hit and killed female doctor

THE father of a female doctor who died after being hit by a policeman speeding down a Bangkok road on a big bike is heartbroken at her death as he himself just retired from the medical profession and had big hopes of her following his footsteps in the field, Sanook.com said this afternoon (Jan. 23).

The policeman, Pol. L/Col Norawit Buadok, head of the 2nd company squadron, supervision division 1 at the protection and crowd control division of Metropolitan Police, has confessed to hitting Dr. Waralak Supawatchariyakul at the zebra crossing in front of Bhumirajanagarindra Kidney Institute Hospital, Phayathai road, at around 3 p.m. on Jan. 21.

He said that he was going very fast and he failed to see her while himself too got injured.

The deceased doctor’s uncle, Anusorn Supawatchariyakul, 63, said during the funeral that the family was concerned about the lawsuit stemming from his niece’s death.

Before the press picked up the story when they asked to see the video clip from the CCTV camera near the pedestrian crossing police had told them that there was only that one camera which belonged to Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and it was not very clear.

However, later when a friend of the deceased doctor asked netizens to spread the word that a video clip of this traffic accident was urgently needed, footage recorded by the kidney hospital was circulated.

Anusorn said his brother, Dr. Anurith, was an ophthalmologist and both his daughters followed him in this medical field.

It was reported that on the day of the accident Dr. Waralak had come to visit a friend at the kidney hospital whereas she herself worked at Ramathibodi Hospital. She was on her way to her condo in Soi Rangnam when she was hit by the big bike and later died.

It was also reported that accidents frequently occur at this zebra crossing as doctors’ residence was right across the street from the kidney hospital while vehicles usually drove fast from Phayathai intersection to Victory Monument.

Meanwhile Pol. Col. Bowonphob Soonthorn, head of Phayathai police station, said Pol. L/Col Norawit has been charged with reckless driving causing the death of others and that he has confessed to all the counts brought against him.

The Inquiry revealed that the policeman who had come to the Metropolitan Police headquarters to pick up some documents was on his way to Victory Monument when the accident occurred. While other vehicles had stopped to let the doctor pass, the policeman failed to do so because he had just changed to the right lane and in coming fast did not see her.
