WITH Thailand’s daily Covid count remaining high at 17,345 new cases and 117 more deaths today (July 30) the first batch of much-needed 1.5 million doses of Pfizer vaccine donated by the US has arrived, Amarin TV said.
Of today’s large new batch of cases, 12,823 emerged in surveillance and health systems, 3,833 through proactive search in communities, 681 in prisons and detention centres, while eight overseas arrivals entered the state quarantine.
This takes the cumulative confirmed total since the start of the pandemic to 578,375 and in the current wave that began in April 549,512.
Another 10,678 patients were cured taking total recoveries to 381,170 with 353,744 having done so in the current wave. Altogether 192,526 are still undergoing treatment with 4,595 in severe condition and 1,012 using ventilators.
Today 117 fatalities took the death toll to 4,679.
An update on the vaccination drive shows from February 28 to July 29 altogether 17,011,477 doses of vaccines were administered divided as follows:
Another 366,663 people received their first jab, taking the total to 13,225,233 who have done so;
An additional 53,485 people got their second jab, taking the total to 3,786,244 who got both shots.
Meanwhile the US Charge d’Affaires in Thailand Michael Heath told a news conference the United States will send another one million doses of Covid-19 vaccine in addition to the batch that was received today, according to a Reuters report published by The Straits Times.
“Our government noticed how quickly the Delta variant has been spreading in this country and the severe conditions that are being faced right now by your health workers,” he said.
Thailand’s vaccine drive has so far depended on Sinovac and AstraZeneca vaccines and faced delays since it began last month. Just 5.6 per cent of the country’s 66 million population has been fully vaccinated so far.
Thailand manufactures the AstraZeneca vaccine under license locally, but production has been much smaller than government expectations, contributing to a delay in the domestic inoculation rollout.
