Troops moving in to control Bangkok workers camps

TROOPS are coming into Bangkok today (June 10) to help police and officials control hundreds of construction workers camps across the metropolis to halt the movement of these workers and stem the current coronavirus wave that started on April 1, TV Channel 7 said.

National Security Council Chief Gen. Nattapon Nakpanich, who is the director of the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration’s (CCSA’s) operations centre, said the mobilisation was made at the request of Bangkok Metropolitan Administration upon being prompted by the Public Health Ministry.

“Previously troops were not deployed because we were worried that people would feel uncomfortable.

“There are 409 construction workers camps and four to five security personnel will be deployed at each point, but they are not needed at all of them.

“This is to strengthen control measures but it has not reached the point of halting construction and related tasks because CCSA is aware of the economic situation therefore must proceed with caution so as to prevent any impact,” Gen. Nattapol said.

Meanwhile CCSA said at 12.30 p.m. that there were 2,310 coronavirus cases over the past 24 hours and 43 more fatalities taking the overall death toll to 1,375 with 1,281 occuring in the current wave that started in April, Amarin TV said.

The new batch of cases raised the cumulative confirmed total since the start of the pandemic to 187,538 and 158,675 in the current wave.

Of today’s cases 2,170 were among the general public, 102 in prisons and detention centres while 38 overseas arrivals were placed in state quarantine.

Another 3,035 patients were cured, taking total recoveries to 139,287, while 46,876 are undergoing treatment with 1,295 in serious condition and among them 359 require ventilators.

Vaccinaation data was also disclosed with 5,443,743 people having got Covid jabs during February 28-June 10, 2021 divided as follows:

– Another 293,719 got their first jab taking cumulative total to 3,966,091;
