Under-construction bridge collapses, 12 Myanmar workers hurt

A BRIDGE being built as part of a ring road in Nakhon Ratchasima province collapsed at around 2 p.m. today (Jan. 23) leading to 12 Myanmar workers getting injured but none very seriously, Siam Rath newspaper reported.

Upon getting a call for help at around that time this province’s Hook 31 rescue team rushed to the site of the accident at Khok Sung subdistrict, Mueang district, where they found a chaotic scene with other workers and people in the neighbourhood trying to help those injured after part of the 10-metre high bridge still being built had collapsed.

Police arrived moments later and took charge, spreading out and positioning rescuers to prevent those not involved from getting close to the collapsed bridge, which is part of the northern section of the ring road around this northeastern city at the point it intersects with Route Number 205 or Suranarai road.

The other workers said this section of the bridge collapsed after the ready-mixed cement was being poured in because the supporting structure was old and unable to bear the weight.
