Policeman in New Year’s Eve murder case released on bail

A DUSIT station police officer who shot dead a Government Pharmaceutical Organisation official at the police flats next door during a New Year’s Eve party was temporarily released on bail by the Criminal Court after confessing to having acted in self-defence, Thai Rath newspaper reported this afternoon (Jan. 2, 2020).

Investigating police officers took Pol. Sgt. Thirayut Chankong, or Ryu, 31, head of the anti-suppression unit at this station, to the court and submitted a petition for the first 12-day detention, from Jan. 2 to Jan. 13, because they had 10 more witnesses to question. However they did not object to granting bail.

The court had approved his detention but because case officers did not object to bail allowed the accused to be released on 500,000 baht surety put up by his relatives.

On the night of Dec. 31 Pol. Sgt. Thirayut was attending a party at the police flats as was Mr. Piyaphong Rungwittayakul, 28, the deceased Government Pharmaceutical Organisation official, and his friends.

The two men argued with this leading to the accused using his personal 9mm CZ-brand carbine to shoot the official several times leading to his death and then fleeing.

He was later tracked down and arrested with Dusit station police officers charging him with intentionally killing another person.
