French media plays up 2 families enjoying lockdown on Koh Samui

MAKING waves in France is the story of two French families who chose to escape Covid-19 by happily locking down on Koh Samui which they called paradise island, PostToday reported this morning (22.5.2020).

The other reasons they gave for opting to be confined on this southern Thai island is this country’s public health system being up to mark and people here often generously donate goods to those in need.

Surat Thani Governor Wichawut Jinto said he was informed by Mrs Supakarn Yodchun, director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) on Koh Samui, that French TV channel M6 had broadcast the story of the Duvernois family from Rhône twice, on the midday programme Le 1245 and night programme Le 1945 on May 17.

This family had sold their house to travel around the world for a year starting February this year with their first stop being Thailand and from here they went to Cambodia.

However on March 21, after being in Laos for a while, they had to stop traveling as countries were shutting their borders amid the coronavirus pandemic and chose to lockdown in Thailand, where they had got a special month-long deal to stay at Ammatarapura on Koh Samui.

“Their story has spread, their daily life starts in the morning when the parents teach the children and help them with their homework. In the afternoon they swim but have to clean the villa pool themselves because of a lack of staff.

“They order food from a beach restaurant that is still open, and it is mandatory on Koh Samui to wear face masks and have their temperature scanned each time they go to a shop.

“This family also donated rice and dried food to local associations to help those in need.

“Over five million people watched the two television programmes,” the governor said.

Mr Wichawut added that the second French family locking down on Koh Samui is from Marseille and their story was covered by the local media France 3 Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur and radio station France Info.

This family told readers and listeners that they were very happy being confined to Koh Samui which is like being on a paradise island.

The governor added that this coverage is very good promotion for Koh Samui and Thailand as a whole for  family tourists seeking ideal holiday spots.
