THE body of a Moroccan tourist who drowned while swimming in the sea with his friend off Phuket’s Karon beach washed up on Kata Noi beach today (Sep. 16), Amarin TV said.

The two Moroccan men got into difficulty while swimming at approximately 6.40 p.m. on Monday and lifeguards and officials successfully rescued one of them, identified as Mr. Mohamed Bourhim, 22, and brought him safely ashore. However, his friend, Mr. Ezzakani Othmane, 25, was swept out to sea by the current and went missing, prompting a continuous search operation by authorities.

Most recently, at 6 a.m. today, Pol. Lt. Col. Ekkasak Kwanwan, an inspector at Karon police station, received a report that the body of a foreign man had been found on Kata Noi beach. He reported the matter to Pol. Col. Pathapee Srichai, the station’s superintendent, before proceeding to the scene to investigate.

At the beach, the foreign man’s body was found lying on the sand, wearing black shorts. Preliminary assessment suggested the deceased was likely the tourist who went missing following the drowning incident at Karon beach.

Subsequently, the investigating officer contacted the missing man’s friend to come and identify the body. It has been confirmed that he is the Moroccan man who had gone missing after being swept away by the current off Karon beach.

Authorities will now proceed with an autopsy and coordinate with Moroccan embassy to contact the deceased’s relatives and arrange for the repatriation of the body for a funeral.
