US Navy personnel from USS Abraham Lincoln who are now holidaying in Pattaya during Sep. 2-6 have been prohibited from engaging in risky activities including not entering Soi 6 and 7 after dark but Walking Street is not out of bounds, Naewna newspaper, TV Channel 7 and PPTVHD36 said today (Sep. 3).
Pattaya Mayor Poramet Ngampichet said the strict guidelines imposed by the US authorities for the sailors’ safety include avoiding water sports and cannabis shops plus not buying medicine from pharmacies without a doctor’s prescription because some are easily available here, unlike in the United States.
Even so Koh Larn and other tourist attractions remain accessible as usual.
Regarding the economy, this visit is expected to help distribute income to local businesses, including restaurants, massage parlours, spas, shopping malls, and entertainment venues.
Each soldier is expected to spend approximately US$100-150 per day, and over the course of their stay in Pattaya, it is estimated that this will generate around 100 million baht in revenue.
TV Channel 7’s reporter surveyed Pattaya’s Walking Street last night and found that the area had become increasingly crowded with both foreign tourists and locals. Groups of US Navy sailors were seen exploring the seaside city and visiting various establishments.
Mr. Sukchan, manager of an entertainment venue, noted that on the first night, there were not many US Navy sailors, presumably because they were still exploring Pattaya’s tourist attractions spread across several areas and business would likely pick up the following nights.
Mr. Tee, who has been driving a shared taxi for over 20 years, said he was happy that US Navy sailors were vacationing in Pattaya, believing it would help generate income and stimulate the local economy, even though the number of passengers did not increase significantly on the first night.
He added that no US Navy personnel had privately hired him with most of them using regular shared taxis. However, he hopes to earn more income through increased service usage.
