THE ELECTION commissioners were today (July 22) encouraged to give up performing in double standard fashion whilst handling the senatorial rigging conspiracy allegedly involving Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and several Bhumjaithai members of cabinet, among others, or else they themselves could probably risk being put behind bars, according to chief opposition whip Parit Wacharasindhu.
The seven commissioners of the polling agency, four of whom were named by pro-Bhumjaithai senators, were ultimately cautioned to refrain from taking double standards investigating the notorious vote-buying, electoral rigging conspiracy which could possibly be covered up by the commissioners themselves at the risk of being prosecuted in court on grounds of allegedly perpetrating misconduct and neglecting their otherwise lawful duty to bring suspected masterminds and manipulators to justice, the People’s MP said.
“Acquired pieces of evidence notwithstanding, if the commissioners have decided against proceeding lawsuits to court and chosen to cover up those suspected mastermind politicians, they should now think it over again or they could probably bear the risk of themselves being thrown in jail,” Parit said.
The commissioners were legally obliged to proceed lawsuits pertaining to the disreputable, vote-buying, electoral rigging plots allegedly involving the prime minister who concurrently acts as leader of the largest coalition partner and other Bhumjaithai ministers, among others, to the Supreme Court rather than manage to keep them from being prosecuted as prime suspects, the chief opposition whip said.
Parit suggested that Anutin and the other Bhumjaithai figures not press a libel lawsuit against Yingcheep Atchanont, project manager of iLaw activist group, who has publicly accused them of involvement in the electoral fraud which landed as many as 138 contestants undue victories in the 2024 senatorial election, rendering them an overwhelming majority among the total 200 senators.
The People’s MP contended that the prime minister and others publicly give clear-cut, truthful explanations to defend themselves over such allegations which had been substantially based on accounts of personal witnesses purportedly present in the scenes of the premeditated rigging shenanigans.
For instance, he said, the prime minister could respond to the allegation that he was seen attending an informal meeting of 100-plus winning candidates at a Bangkok hotel to get themselves prepared en masse for the naming of a Senate speaker and a couple of deputy Senate speakers rather than have the iLaw activist sued for defamatory charges in court.
Yingcheep quoted unnamed witnesses as alleging that the prime minister and other Bhumjaithai ministers were separately spotted in the notorious scenes. Those Bhumjaithai figures among a total of 229 suspects included Deputy Prime Minister Songsak Thongsri, largely known as personally close to de facto Bhumjaithai boss Newin Chidchob, Prime Minister’s Office Minister Paradorn Prisnanuntakul, chief government whip Koravee Prisnanuntakul, Transport Minister Pipat Ratchakitprakarn, Prime Minister’s Office Minister Napinthorn Srisanpang, Prime Minister’s Office Minister Suksamruay Wantaneeyakul and former deputy House speaker Supachai Bhosu, among others.
However, the prime minister categorically dismissed his alleged involvement in the electoral rigging conspiracy saying he had by no means done anything about it and that he was not head of government at the time when the senatorial election was held two years ago. Anutin who concurrently acts as interior minister said he would have been held one of the suspects “long time ago” if ever found involved in it.
