12 minor earthquakes shake Surat Thani

AS MANY AS 12 minor earthquakes struck Surat Thani since last evening (Mar. 8) with the strongest being 3.5 on the Richter scale, Amarin TV said today.

The Geological Disaster Operations Centre said a succession of 12 earthquakes hit this southern province’s Ban Ta Khun district and while tremors were felt no damage occurred. These ranged from 1.7 to 3.5 in magnitude with the strongest, the  3.5 magnitude quake, occurring at 5.41 p.m. at a depth of one kilometre.

At 12.03 a.m. this same area was hit by a quake measuring 2.2 on the Richter scale, likewise at a depth of one kilometre.

That these quakes are occurring is due to the Khlong Marui Fault Zone, which is oriented in a northeast-southwest direction, exhibiting a left lateral strike-slip faulting. Eleven minor quakes also hit this province on Feb. 12.
