CARETAKER Prime Minister-cum-Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul today (Jan. 27) dismissed rumours of a third round of fighting erupting along the Thai-Cambodian border as the military had informed him during a visit to Sa Kaeo province yesterday that despite Cambodians building more trenches close to the border there are no signs of conflict or violence escalating, PPTVHD36 said.
The two countries have held discussions and addressed actions that raised suspicion, he said, while emphasising the need to adhere to the agreement signed on Dec. 27.
Regarding Cambodia avoiding clearing landmines on the Thai side but doing so along the border with other neighbouring countries, Anutin said Thai troops are staying within the national boundary and if there are no threats Khmers must act according to the agreement to clear mines with this pact not only being with Thailand but with the world.
The term “humanitarian mine clearance,” is binding on both countries and if either side finds landmines planted anywhere, immediate action can be taken without consulting the other.
“As for Thailand, we will clear any mines we find, especially in areas under Thai sovereign control,” he said.
Questioned about Cambodia digging trenches just 500 metres from the border and in an area where heavy fighting took place is a cause of concern even though they are doing so within their territory, Anutin replied that each country can build its defenses, and Thailand will also defend its territory.
“We stand by our position of not interfering with the sovereignty of other parties, nor allowing other parties to infringe on our sovereignty,” he said.
