1 dead, 21 injured as speedboat collides with a trawler off Krabi

 

A RUSSIAN teenage girl died and 21 others were injured after a speedboat carrying 52 tourists collided with a trawler near Koh Kai and Koh Phi Phi islands off Krabi province this morning (Jan. 11), Amarin TV said.

The Phuket Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office said the accident occurred at approximately 8.55 a.m. near Koh Kai island while the Phuket Regional Marine Department said the 23.18-gross-ton speedboat carrying 55 people, three crew members and 52 passengers, collided with the trawler fishing near Koh Phi Phi island.

While the speedboat sustained damage the trawler was unharmed and there was no environmental damage.

Phuket Provincial Administration Organisation’s Andaman 3 and Andaman 5 boats were sent to take those who got injured to Koh Phi Phi Hospital but relevant agencies are currently assisting in bringing them to Phuket’s Chalong Bay pier.

Phuket provincial officials are closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with all sectors to ensure the safety of the tourists.

Latest reports indicate one fatality, identified as 18-year-old Miss Starykh Elizaveta from Russia, and while 21 people were injured the number of missing remained unknown.
