THAI JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets bombed a casino used as a Cambodian command post at O’Smach border town adjacent to Thai Chong Chom town, Surin province, late last night (Dec. 9) having to dodge suicide drones fired from BM-21 rocket launchers, Amarin TV said.
The sortie was undertaken because this casino, named Lim Heng, is used by Khmer forces to launch suicide drones via BM-21 multiple-barrel rocket launchers and troop consolidation point.
JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets engaged in real combat for the first time ever last July during the Thai air force’s air strike missions against invading Cambodian forces in Thailand’s disputed border areas.
Meanwhile the Second Army Region also said late last night that Cambodian troops had mounted heavy attacks on the Thai side with fighting continuing.
These attacks are widespread and violent and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Khmer troops used 125 BM-21 launchers to fire 5,000 rockets and 33 drones to the Thai side, particularly at Chong An Ma and Chong Bok areas of Ubon Ratchathani province, Thiang Ta Mok area of Sisaket province, and Chong Khana area of Prasat Ta Kwai in Surin Province. The Thai military responded with proportionate firepower.
As a result of heavy clashes since Sunday afternoon four Thai soldiers have now died and 68 got injured. Altogether 61 Cambodian soldiers have been killed and an unknown number injured.
