POLICE and rescue workers rushed to an alley in Pattani City this morning (Sep. 23) after being alerted that a newborn baby girl was found abandoned in a paper bag in front of a house, TV Channel 7 said.
Upon arrival they found that the baby with the umbilical cord still attached was wrapped in an old sarong then put in the paper bag and left at the fence. Fortunately the owner of the house who just took the trash out of his home stumbled upon her and quickly carried her indoors and called the authorities.
Rescuers gave the baby first aid then rushed her to the hospital where doctors said after a thorough examination that she is safe and currently under close medical care.
Police are chasing the baby’s mother by going through surveillance camera clips, from this alley and nearby areas, particularly a student dormitory located near Prince of Songkhla University, Pattani Campus, to identify the mother for legal action.
This incident has shocked local residents, who criticised the mother’s inhumane behaviour, abandoning her baby in this manner without regard for her safety. They are calling on those involved to take responsibility.
Mr. Prateep Euanmongkol, who found the baby, said moments after he took the trash out just as he does every morning he noticed a paper bag placed in front of the fence. Curiously, he examined it closely and was shocked to discover the newborn baby inside. The baby was not crying but was moving, and he quickly took her indoors and called the police.
If her parents are not found he is going to adopt her.
