Chiang Mai geese appointed full-time employees

A FLOCK of 10 geese set free at Chiang Mai moat to help control aquatic weed plaguing this canal have been promoted full-time municipal employees and will be given identification cards stating so, Thai Rath newspaper said today (Aug. 31).

This followed a vote on Chiang Mai Municipality’s Facebook page on whether the geese squad had passed their probation after two days of discussion about them. Of 13,698 people nationwide who cast their vote, 12,358  (90%) said they had while 1,340 (10%) gave the thumbs down.

The whole flock will now be vaccinated, dewormed, given vitamins before being microchipped and issued identification cards as full-time municipal employees.

This is good news for geese lovers who want to continue to see these adorable creatures spreading their cuteness through the moat. They believe that while they may not contribute much in clearing the aquatic weeds, they are helping promote tourism and revitalising the city’s atmosphere.

Meanwhile Chaloem Phrakiat King’s 82nd Birthday Anniversary Park was bustling as thousands streamed in to watch 14 swans swimming in the pond and waddling around. The Provincial Administration Organisation had released 10 of them and Chiang Mai Night Safari four with eight being black and six white.

The aim is to bring joy to the residents and build up tourism with their presence having now encouraged local residents to leave their homes and exercise. The park is crowded on weekends with food vendors in front of the park benefiting from strong sales.
