Cambodia beats Thailand in information warfare: Senior US official

A VISITING senior US official told the Thai army that Cambodia has an advantage over Thailand in information warfare but Washington will help confirm accurate news, Naewna newspaper said today (Aug. 15).

US Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defence for South and Southeast Asia Dr. Andrew Byers pointed this out at a meeting with Gen. Thongchai Rodyoy, Thai army chief of staff representing Thai Army Chief Gen. Pana Klaewplodthuk, during his visit to Thailand to introduce himself.

The global community’s perception of the tensions and clashes along the Thai-Cambodian border is being influenced by the advantage Cambodia has over Thailand on the information front but the US will use IoT/AoT (Internet of Things and Analytics of Things) to verify accuracy, he said.

Other issues raised at this meeting are as follows:

–  Regarding the Thai-Cambodian border situation: The Thai army thanked the US for supporting ceasefire negotiations while pointing out that it is working on reaching agreements though upcoming General Border Committee and Regional Border Committee meetings. The Thai army is concerned about Cambodia continuing to plant landmines along the border and using drones for patrols, which infringe on Thai sovereignty.

– Dissemination of fake news in Cambodia is creating hatred among the peoples of the two countries with this currently difficult to control and restricts government operations.

The Thai army emphasised the establishment of an Interim Observer Team while an Asean Observer Team is being established to help mitigate escalation of tensions along the border.

– Byers said the US agrees that the Thai-Cambodian conflict should be resolved through Asean mechanisms without the United Nations having to step in. The US stands ready to fully support Malaysia and Asean in this effort.
