New Thai-Lao train service debuts tomorrow

STARTING tomorrow (July 19) is a new Thai-Lao train service directly linking Bangkok and Vientiane with this being a project undertaken by the governments of the two countries to better connect rail systems, TV Channel 7 said today.

This daily rail service is an extension of the Bangkok-Nong Khai route with the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) having just opened reservations and these can be made up to 180 days in advance.

The outgoing train, Rapid No. 133, will depart Bangkok’s Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Station in the evening and arrive in Vientiane’s Khamsavath station the next morning and vice versa for the returning train, Rapid No. 134. Rapid No. 133/134 comprises 30 seats in the second-class air-conditioned sleeper carriage, 64 seats in the second-class air-conditioned carriage, and 152 seats in two of the third-class ordinary carriages with fans.

SRT also operates Rapid No. 147/148 train between Udon Thani and Khamsavath station.

The fares for the new Thai-Thai rail line is as follows:

–  Second-class air-conditioned sleeper carriage, upper bed 784 baht and lower bed 874 baht;

– Second-class air-conditioned carriage, 574 baht;

– Third-class ordinary carriages with fans 281 baht.

How to make a reservation:

– Book tickets online at http://www.dticket.railway.co.th;

– Book through the call centre number 1690 and check the date and time of travel immediately;

– Walk in and book at the station’s ticket booths.

Passengers must have either a passport or a border pass for customs and immigration at Nongkhai and Vietiane before travelling across the border.
