Thaksin among top 10 billionaires in Thailand, Dhanin heads list

AGAIN topping Forbes magazine’s 10 Richest in Thailand list for this year is Mr. Dhanin Chearavanont, senior president of Charoen Pokphand Group Co., Ltd. (CP), while de facto Pheu Thai boss Thaksin Shinawatra is also among them placing 10th together with Mr. Harald Link, president of B.Grimm Power Plc, Thai Rath newspaper said this morning (Apr. 5).

While this year’s list has barely changed from last year with Dhanin still topping it but Thaksin and Link having climbed up, a significant difference is that the 10 Richest in Thailand have become “poorer” when compared to the 10 Richest in the World who are getting richer.

The Richest in Thailand 2024 list is as follows:

1) Mr. Dhanin Chearavanont, CP, net worth US$12.5 billion dollars (approximately 458 billion baht), net asset value tallied from stock prices and exchange rates on March 8, 2024 with various types of businesses included. He ranks as the 159th global billionaire.

2)  Mr. Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi, net asset value US$11.3 billion, food and beverage business;

3) Mr. Sarath  Ratanavadi, net asset value US$10.7 billion, energy business;

4) Mr. Sumet Chearavanont, net asset value US$5.5 billion, various businesses;

5) Mr. Charan Chearavanont, net asset value of US$5.4 billion, various businesses;

6) Mr. Vanich Chaiyawan, net asset value of US$3.8 billion, financial and investment business;

7) Dr.Prasert Prasarttong-Osoth, net asset value US$3.7 billion, healthcare business;

8) Mrs. Somurai Jaruphnit, net asset value US$3.1 billion, various businesses;

9) Mr. Prayudh Mahagitsiri, net asset value US$2.2 billion, food and beverage business;

10) Tied at US$2.1 billion each are Link and Thaksin.

It is noteworthy that Thailand’s top 10 billionaires have nearly all seen their wealth decline, led by Dhanin whose total dwindled by US$2.4 billion from what was quoted by Forbes last April.

The one Thai billionaire whose wealth increased is Prasert, the founder of Bangkok Dusit Medical Services Plc (BDMS), with his net asset value jumping by approximately $200 million to $3.7 billion.

Only Mr. Somphote Ahunai, CEO of Energy Absolute Plc (EA) was dropped from the list while Thaksin and Link moved up with $2.1 billion each (about 77 billion baht).

There are a total of 26 Thai billionaires on the Forbes World Billionaires list for 2024, with Mr. Prachak Tangkaravakoon, former chairman of the board of directors of TOA Paint (TOA), who placed 26th on the Thailand list being No. 2,545 on the global list with a net worth of $1.1 billion.

Prachak was ranked among Forbes’ top 10 Thai billionaires in 2018.
