FORMER Bangkok governor Chadchart Sittipunt today (June 3) kicked off a new dimension in campaigning for gubernatorial and city council election set to take place on June 28 by introducing novel artistic campaign signs while Democrat leader Abhisit Vejjajiva rallied support for his party’s candidate Mr. Anucha Burapachaisri in Phaya Thai area, Amarin TV said.

Chadchart arrived at Siam Square Soi 1 in a parade float to launch his campaign, entitled “Let’s Open It!”, with this displaying a cartoon image of himself along with the message, “The City Creates Opportunities, Team Chatchart Creates Hope, Bangkok Works,” and a QR code for reading his policies.

During the unveiling ceremony, Chatchart jumped out of the elevator, displayed the number 9 symbol and showed his chest, in keeping with the campaign sign.

He said the idea to use artistic campaign signs stemmed from perception that the usual ones are boring and cluttered and he wanted to turn them into works of art. These artistic campaign signs focus on policies rather than just displaying the candidate’s face and number.

His team contacted several artists to rotate their work and today’s signs are by Mr. Sarattha Chungsathienprasert, or Kaen, an artist and graphic designer behind the Facebook page “Uninspired by current events” who helped interpret his policies and turned them into visuals.

He emphasised that the budget for campaign artwork is relatively low as his team is renting display space for only 15 seconds, and rotating the artists.

Meanwhile senior Democrats led by Abhisit canvassed for Anucha in Phaya Thai in a lively atmosphere, greeting the public, vendors, and motorcycle taxi riders, receiving a warm welcome and taking photos together in a friendly manner. They also offered alms to the monks.

Abhisit mentioned that public response has been improving gradually, although it may not have been significant at first. “But now, after visiting the areas, awareness and response have improved, but we have to work hard.”

The Democrats are holding a big rally on June 17 or 18 where the party’s policies will be presented in full as well as key points gathered during field trips.

This camp is also pushing one key policy which is utilising land to the fullest potential.

“In the past, land taxes were not collected in full; landowners used the land for agriculture to avoid high taxes. But from our perspective, those areas can be used for public benefit, and the BMA can incentivise this through tax reductions. These areas could be used for art and related public parks,” Abhisit said.
