Tourist dies at EDC music festival in Phuket

A TOURIST who collapsed at Electric Daisy Carnival Thailand 2026 (EDC Thailand) music festival being held today (Jan. 18) at Choeng Thale subdistrict, Thalang district, Phuket, later died at a hospital, Amarin TV said.

At around 3.15 p.m. Pol. Lt. Col. Thanaphop Rattanaburi, an investigating officer at Thalang police station, was informed by the emergency room at Thalang Hospital that a tourist who  was rushed there after collapsing that this music festival, which started on Friday Jan. 16, had died.

The deceased was identified as Mr. Jane Saksham, 28, an Indian national with a physical examination not showing any wounds or signs of physical assault.

Initial investigation revealed that before his death the tourist had been at the EDC festival, subsequently becoming delirious and destroyed property, including a car parked in front of Wat Sompharong in Choeng Thale subdistrict. An emergency medical service then took him to  Thalang Hospital in an ambulance, where he was found to be in shock and subsequently died.

The coroner stated that as the cause of death could not be determined  his body has been sent to Vachira Phuket Hospital for an autopsy. The Indian embassy is being contacted to inform the deceased’s relatives so that they could collect  his body for a funeral .

Electric Daisy Carnival, commonly known as EDC, is an electronic dance music festival organised by promoter and distributor Insomniac. The annual flagship event, EDC Las Vegas, is held in May at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, and is the largest electronic dance music festival in North America as of 2024, Wikipedia said.

The event features electronic dance producers and DJs, and incorporates a variety of electronic music, including house, techno, drum and bass, and dubstep. In addition to the music, event-goers experience three-dimensional superstructures, colourful glow-in-the-dark environments, and LED-lit flora and fauna. There are also interactive art installations throughout EDC, free-roaming carnival performers, and carnival rides.

Since its inception, other EDC events have been held in other states and abroad, including Mexico, Puerto Rico, the UK, Brazil, Japan and India. Currently, EDC is held annually in Orlando, China, and Mexico, along with the main Las Vegas event.
