AN ATTACK by Thai troops on a Cambodian battalion headquarters today (Dec. 9) led to 46 Khmer troops being killed while two more Thai soldiers died taking the total since this round of clashes started on Sunday to three, Amarin TV said.

A post on the Army Military Force Facebook page said Thai soldiers had used artillery to attack the headquarters of Cambodia’s 9th Support Battalion, under the 3rd Division, which was an assembly point of Bodyguard Headquarters (BHQ) troops.

BHQ is an elite and heavily armed security unit within the Cambodian armed forces tasked with the protection of Cambodia’s top government officials.

Information shared by Khmer soldiers in a Cambodian military Telegram group revealed that 46 Cambodian soldiers had died. The post and image were deleted just five minutes later.

The Army Military Force Facebook page also said that the Thai air force is sending JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets, loaded with bombs, to strike Cambodian military targets.

Meanwhile Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul honoured the three brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives to protect Thai sovereignty and promised to take good care of their families in a message on his personal Facebook page.

“I pay my respects to these three brave heroes who sacrificed their lives to protect the sovereignty of the Thai nation. I send my condolences to their families and promise to provide the best possible care to all family members. Your sacrifice will certainly not be in vain.”

In another development the First Army Region said a Burapha Task Force unit has used tank artillery to destroy a casino on the Cambodian side of the border opposite Ta Phraya district, Sa Kaeo province, with this used to store munitions and machine gun turrets.
