CAMBODIA told the 43rd UNESCO general assembly in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, that the five-day border clashes between Thai and Khmer soldiers in July caused serious damage to the World Heritage Site of Preah Vihear Temple, Naewna newspaper said today (Nov. 4).

Dr. Phoeung Sackona, Cambodian minister of culture and fine arts, told the UNESCO meeting taking place during Oct. 30-Nov. 13, that Cambodia deeply regrets the irreparable damage to this precious and rare cultural monument.

However Cambodia also expressed strong appreciation of the signing of the Joint Statement on Peace Agreement between the two countries on Oct. 26, which was endorsed and witnessed by US President Donald Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

The Khmer minister further stated that Cambodia sincerely hopes that all UNESCO member states will continue their commitment to protecting and preserving world cultural heritage.

Cambodia had in July submitted an official letter to Mr. Zurab Pololikashvili, secretary-general of UN Tourism, calling for condemnation of Thai military attack, which they claimed damaged Preah Vihear Temple.
