ANOTHER accident occurred on Rama II road this morning (Apr. 29) with chucks of concrete from a flyover to Samut Sakhon City falling on a pickup truck seriously injuring the driver who suffered a ruptured liver and is being transferred to a better-equipped hospital for an emergency operation, TV Channel 7 and Amarin TV said.

AT 7.40 a.m., the young man, only identified as Mr. Amnart, got badly injured after two pieces of concrete, one approximately 30 centimetres long, fell and smashed through the windshield hitting him at the chin and stomach.

Samut Sakhon Highways Department said the large concrete pieces had broken off from the Krathum Baen-Mahachai flyover and not the elevated expressway being built on this road. A detailed investigation is being undertaken to find the cause of this accident.

On March 15 a beam at a bridge being built near the Dao Khanong toll plaza collapsed killing six workers and injuring 24 others.

Deputy Prime Minister/Transport Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit clarified that this accident is not linked to the Rama II expressway construction project which is being undertaken by the Expressway Authority of Thailand, parallel to this road.

He has ordered the Highways Department to take care of and maintain old bridges so that this sort of an accident does not occur again.
