IMAGES from RADARSAT-2 satellite obtained by Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (Gistda) show that a total of 313,621 rai of land, mostly agricultural areas, residential communities and some transportation routes, have been flooded in the South, TV Channel 7 said this morning (Dec. 3).
Altogether 49,206 housholds have been inundated while the weather bureau has warned of more rain till Thursday (Dec. 5)
Five provinces most heavily flooded are Pattani, Songkhla, Narathiwat, Nakhon Si Thammarat, and Phatthalung.
This assessment of the severe flooding in the South is based on approximate analysis of satellite images with Gistda having sent the data to key agencies handling the crisis.
Meanwhile the Meteorological Department warned that from today till Thursday (Dec. 5) a low-pressure cell in lower South China Sea is moving through the lower South and Malaysia to lower Andaman Sea and the Strait of Malacca while a moderate northeasterly monsoon covers the Gulf of Thailand with this bringing heavy to very heavy rain to some areas in this region.
Provinces expected to experience heavy to very heavy rain are as follows:
Today (Dec. 3):
Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat, Trang and Satun;
Tomorrow (Dec. 4):
Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat, Krabi, Trang and Satun;
Thursday (Dec. 5):
Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat, Krabi, Trang and Satun.
Waves in the lower Gulf of Thailand are moderate, being one to two metres high, but rising higher than that during thunderstorm. In the upper Gulf of Thailand and Andaman Sea waves are approximately a metre high but rising higher than that during rainstorm.
Sailors are advised to put out to sea with caution and avoid stormy areas.
