PHEU THAI Party appears unconcerned by People’s Party gearing up to expand a case against its MP and former Fourth Army Region commander Pisal Watanawongkhiri believed to have gone abroad to escape arrest for his alleged involvement in 2004’s Tak Bai manslaughter into a no-confidence motion against the government, Naewna newspaper said this afternoon (Oct. 6).
Dr. Cherdchai Tontisirin, a Pheu Thai MP, said it is the right of the opposition to proceed according to the legal framework but everything must be carried out according to the law and People’s must act as the opposition and not in a vengeful manner.
Even though the statute of limitations expires on Oct. 25, it is pitiful if Pisal is really sick and has to undergo medical treatment, he said, adding he does not know whether he will report to court before this statute expires because it is his personal matter.
The former southern army commander who had performed in the time of former prime minister/now de facto Pheu Thai boss Thaksin Shinawatra had been held accountable, alongside eight other suspects, for the historic manslaughter of 85 southern protesters, 78 of whom had suffocated after they had been rounded up by army troops outside Tak Bai police station and carried aboard overcrowded army trucks on the way to an army camp in Pattani.
Cherdchai also said that he is not worried by Sondhi Limthongkul, former leader of the People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD), and Jatuporn Prompan, former Red Shirt leader, possibly launching rallies to oust the government because it is normal in a democracy to have different opinions.
However as this government has only been in office for a month they should ask the people whether they agree with holding this sort of a rally as it is currently working on solving economic problems.
