BURIRAM, THE NORTHEASTERN HOME province of Education Minister Permpun Chidchob, has been officially declared Thailand’s latest education sandbox.

The Bhumjaithai-attached education minister, brother of de facto Bhumjaithai boss Newin Chidchob, confirmed today (Mar. 27) the cabinet has recently approved the setup of Buriram as the 20th education sandbox where the Office of Basic Education Commission will implement educational improvement projects.

The 19 other education sandboxes include Chiang Mai and Mae Hong Son in the northern region, Sukhothai in the central region, Kanchanaburi in the western region, Ubon Ratchathani and Sisaket in the northeastern region, Rayong, Chanthaburi, Sa Kaeo and Trat in the eastern region, Surat Thani, Songkhla, Phuket, Krabi, Satul, Narathiwat, Yala and Pattani in the southern region and Bangkok.

A total of 1,493 schools in those provinces have so far been officially declared education sandboxes.

Buriram is largely known as the biggest stronghold of the second largest coalition partner and home town of the Chidchob family including former Bhumjaithai secretary-general Saksayam Chidchob who has been accused of illegally manipulating to syphon off millions of baht in cash from a private contractor firm, namely Buri Charoen Construction Co., to Newin’s camp to finance their electoral campaigns at the time of his performing as transport minister last year.

If finally found guilty as charged, the Bhumjaithai could possibly be dissolved by court with all members of the coalition partner’s executive board being banned from political activity at all levels for a number of years.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission has been alleged by government critics of dragging their feet on the procedures under which a lawsuit in pursuit of a dissolution of the Bhumjaithai on grounds of illegal campaign finance may be forwarded to the Constitutional Court.
