Democrat brothers jog home after being freed from jail

ONE OF two brothers who were released on parole today (Nov. 6) after serving 16 months of a two-year sentence for election fraud and jogged 10 kilometres home from the prison in Nakhon Si Thammarat will be holding a press conference tomorrow on political direction, Naewna newspaper said.

Mr. Thepthai Senpong, a former Democrat MP, and his younger brother Mr. Manote Senpong, former chairman of the Provincial Administration Organisation, were released after completing two-thirds of their sentence but still have to wear  electronic monitoring (EM) bracelet for eight months while also having lost their election rights for 10 years as part of their sentence.

Upon being freed they prayed that the shine outside the prison before jogging 10 kilometres home as they had both vowed to do.

Once the two of them and their friends completed the long jog in the afternoon heat lots of people flocked in to greet them giving them flowers and embracing them.

Thepthai later thanked the prison commander for having taken good care of them according to the regulations and also senior Democrat members for visiting them among them were Ms. Kalaya Sophonpanich, Ms. Pimpattra Wichaikul as well as party leaders Mr. Chuan Leekpai and Mr. Abhisit Vejjajiva.

“Tomorrow (Nov. 7) there will be a press conference regarding political direction, at both national and local level, on ways to move forward,” he said.

This case stemmed from the election for chairman of Provincial Administration Organisation in 2013 which Manote won but was later accused of violating election rules by throwing a party at a restaurant while campaigning.

The provincial prosecutor later expanded the case and named Manote as first defendant and his brother Thepthai the second defendant.
