IN the aftermath of the big blaze at a beer hall in Soi Ladprao 1, Chatuchak district, close to midnight last Sunday (July 12) Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) today (July 16) temporarily closed three nightspots that did not meet safety standards with rigorous inspections being mounted across the city’s 50 districts, PPTVHD36 and Amarin TV said.

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt has ordered officials at all 50 districts to coordinate with the police in proactively inspecting entertainment venues to ascertain whether their fire prevention and emergency response meet the required standards.

They will also be verifying their business licences and checking if their building usage is in accordance with the Building Control Act B.E. 2522 (1979).

If any establishment has shoddy safety standards or fails to comply with regulations, BMA will take decisive legal action, ordering a temporary suspension of operations until improvements are made to comply with the law.

The three nightspots already temporarily shut are as follows:

– A pub in Rama 1 road area, Pathumwan district, was ordered to temporarily cease operation after being found to be operating illegally as a club with live music, lighting, and sound without a licence. There were no fire exit signs and emergency exits were obstructed.

– An entertainment venue with music performance and karaoke in Charansanitwong area of Bangkok Noi district was urgently ordered to immediately temporarily cease operation after it was discovered that it was running without a proper permit for businesses that are hazardous to health and posed a risk to public health and well-being.

– An entertainment venue in the Phetchaburi area of Ratchathewi district was suspended after the operator continued to illegally run it despite previous warnings and advisories. The establishment was ordered to cease operation within seven days of the date of the order.

Meanwhile the Chatuchak district office today updated the death toll in the beer hall blaze to 33 with all of them identified, MNG Online said.

A total of 71 people were injured, categorised as follows: 14 with severe symptoms (red category), 13 with moderate symptoms (yellow category), and 44 with minor symptoms (green category). All those in the green category have already been discharged.
