1 missing, 5 injured as speedboat explodes in Phuket

A SPEEDBOAT undergoing repairs at a pier in Phuket caught fire and then exploded at around 11 a.m. this morning (April 6) with one person missing and five others injured, Amarin TV said.

The Phuket Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office was alerted of a speedboat named Tequila,registration number 685101413, being engulfed by flames at Coco pier in Wichit subdistrict, Mueang district, with the subdistrict team along local administration officials and an emergency response team rushing there.

Pol. Maj. Gen. Sinlert Sukhum, commander of Phuket Provincial Police, inspected the scene and said a guide was missing while the five persons who got injured, four men and one woman, were crew members and maintenance workers.

The boat was towed away from the pier for firefighting efforts and has sunk near Koh Tapao Yai.

Two of the five injured persons were sent to Dibuk Hospital, two others to Vachira Phuket Hospital, and one to Phuket Provincial Administration Organisation Hospital.

Phuket’s Kusoltham Foundation’s diving team is searching for the missing guide.
