ALTHOUGH Caretaker Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said today (Dec. 29) that the situation along Thai-Cambodian border is currently normal with any minor mishaps not posing a threat to the country he underscored that he will push the construction of a wall along this border, Naewna newspaper and PPTVHD36 said.

Amid this calm the Phnom Penh municipality announced a ban on lighting all types of fireworks during New Year celebrations to prevent unforeseen problems.

The Cambodian capital’s administration urged citizens, companies, private organisations and tourists, both domestic and international, to comply.

Speaking after visiting Prasat Ta Kwai ancient temple and Hill 350, Anutin said the morale of the soldiers was still high although they missed home.

Asked whether Bhumjaithai Party, which he heads and is the core of the current coalition government, would build a wall and fences along this border, he replied this policy has already been tabled and both structures would be built to prevent easy attacks and threats.

He emphasized that there is a consensus that construction of a border wall should be prioritised for national security.

Questioned whether engineers had inspected Hill 350 to determine whether a wall could be built there, Anutin said construction would proceed at points marked by the military with a budget for this purpose having already been allocated and if necessary additional funds could be requested.

On whether Prasat Ta Kwai which suffered considerable damage in the fighting this month could be restored, Anutin said upholding sovereignty means maintaining territorial integrity and any damaged structures will be restored later.

“I have spoken with Ms. Sabida Thaiseth, the Minister of Culture, who confirmed that she has discussed the matter with the Fine Arts Department and other relevant parties, and they have confirmed that restoration is possible. But the important thing now is that we have reclaimed every square inch of land that we believe we lost.”
