THE mother of a Thai soldier whose right ankle got severed upon stepping on a landmine today (Aug. 27) was shocked and saddened at hearing the news yet proud of him for serving the country, Amarin TV said this evening.

Pvt. Adison Pomklang, or Ko, a mini-machine gunner attached to the 1st Infantry Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, stepped on a PMN-2 mine while patrolling the area to the right of Prasat Ta Kwai temple, Surin province, at around 3.45 p.m. – becoming the sixth soldier to lose a limb in a mine blast.

He was taken to Surin Hospital where his condition is now stable.

This TV Channel’s news team visited the injured soldier’s house in Nakhon Ratchasima (Korat) where relatives and other villagers had gathered to enquire about his condition and offer support.

Also there was Pvt. Adisorn’s three-year-old daughter Rinlada.

His mother, Ms. Saowalak Pomklang, 46, tearfully said that her son had drawn a red card in the annual army draft lottery and was willing to serve his country.

Upon getting a phone call this afternoon that her son had stepped on a landmine she at first thought it was a prank but when the officer confirmed that this had actually happened she nearly collapsed.

She admitted being shocked and saddened but also proud of her son’s performance.

She related that when she last spoke to Pvt. Adison two to three days ago, he told her that he was fine but still had to go out on patrols everyday. He also mentioned that a piece of sarong she had tied on his wrist had got lost which she felt was a premonition of danger.

Mr. Lai Pomklang, 56, his father said he was saddened by his son’s disability yet proud that he had protected the country.

Mrs. Chuchai Sonkoi, the soldier’s grandmother, recounted that two days earlier her grandson had called to tell her about losing the piece of sarong tied on his wrist and she felt uneasy, believing it was indeed a bad omen.

Meanwhile at Ban Nong Chan in Sa Kaeo the patriotism rally still continued with the villagers singing the national anthem and chanting encouragement for Thai soldiers.

However the Thai army posted a video showing that Cambodian officials had brought mobile toilets to their protest area, which is within Thai territory.

The accompanying caption says: “Khmers going to stay long? Cambodians are moving mobile toilets into #BanNongChan.”
