Unrest in Far-South continues as insurgents kill officer

 THE UNREST in the three Far-South provinces continued today (March 10) with a Volunteer Defence Force officer being shot dead by insurgents in Yala, Naewna newspaper quoted YalaToday as saying.

 The attack took place at 2 a.m.in village number 3, Sa-e subdistrict, Krong Pinang district, with an unknown number of insurgents using unidentified weapons opening fire at VDC Sgt Maj. Saudi.

This was followed by suspicious objects being found at three spots, one tied to a power pole at the head of Paramitha bridge, another placed on this bridge and the third tied to another power pole 40 metres away from the bridge.

 This bridge is located along the route from Paramitha intersection to Pong Yurai intersection, Budi sub-district, Mueang district, Yala province.

In the two attacks on Saturday night, the first took place at around 7 p.m. when assailants opened fire, threw explosives and detonated bombs outside the district office of Sungai Kolok, a town on the Malaysia-Thailand border in Narathiwat province,  killing two defence volunteers guarding the office and wounded 12 others.

Later at 11 p.m. a roadside bomb killed three people, including two local village assistants and a ranger guarding the area, and wounding one other person in neighbouring Pattani province.
