Netizens cheering for Thai movie’s Oscar success

NETIZENS are elated that a Thai movie, “How to Make Millions before Grandma Dies” (Thai title “Lan Ma”) has made history by becoming the first one from this country to have been shortlisted as one of the final 15 running for this year’s Best International Feature Film Oscar, Naewna newspaper said today (Jan. 22),

They are now cheering for this movie to make it to the final five selection with the announcement being broadcast live at 8:30 p.m.onwards tomorrow (Jan. 23) on True Film 1 or via the TrueVisions NOW App.

This movie, directed by Pat Boonnitipat, produced by Wanruedee Pongsittisak and Jira Maligool, and starring Putthipong Assaratanakul, Tontawan Tantivejakul, Sanya Kunakorn, Phongsatorn Jongwilas, SarinratThomas and Usa Semkham received overwhelmingly positive reviews and became a box office phenomenon in several countries across Asia, according to Wikipedia.

It is inspired by a true story of a Thai family with the character M (Putthipong Assaratanakul) deciding to quit his job and return to live with Grandma Mengju (Usa Semkham).

On the surface, it seems like the grandchild is taking care of Grandma in her old age, but in reality, M has a hidden agenda. After learning that Mui (Tontawan Tantivejkul) has inherited a large house worth ten million baht from her grandfather, M wants to do everything to win Grandma’s trust. But the wall that Grandma has set up leads to M learning how to move through life one step at a time until something is completely changed by Grandma.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ shortlist for the international feature film category, from 85 countries and regions that were in the running, are as follows with the list being in alphabetical order by country:
