RESIDENT of Betong city in southernmost Yala province and near the Malaysian border queued up to fill petrol at pumps amid ongoing torrential rain fearing a shortage as the key road to Yala city has been cut off with some pumps running out of supply, Naewna newspaper said this evening (Nov. 29).
At Ratana filling station in Betong municipality, a long line of cars and motorcycles stretched down the road as residents waited patiently to tank up. Policemen were on hand to maintain law and order.
Some had brought plastic containers to buy additional petrol but were not allowed to get any extra for fear of hoarding and supply not being enough for the others waiting in line.
Residents said this is an historic event because they had never seen such long queues at petrol stations and they too were in the line to fill up.
Panic gripped the city after it was reported that the Meteorological Department had issued a warning that heavy rain could continue till Dec. 4 and as Route 410 between Yala City and Betong has been cut off oil trucks might not be able to travel to this border city.
