A FILIPINO man wanted for stealing a diamond necklace at a department store earlier this year was arrested as soon as he landed at Suvarnabhumi Airport today (Sept. 5) with police suspecting he returned to steal more jewellery, Naewna newspaper said.
The suspect, only identified as Mr. Rolly, 46, was arrested by Crime Suppression and Immigration police under a warrant issued by Bangkok South Criminal Court on May 25 on a charge of “theft by disguising one’s face or in other ways so as not to be recognized.”
The suspect had previously arrived in Thailand on March 26 and went to steal jewellery at a department store in Pathumwan area. He asked to see some items displayed in a glass cabinet and just when the seller was not paying attention pocketed a 20-gramme gold necklace encrusted with 9.40 carats of diamonds worth 250,000 baht and fled. After identifying him via surveillance camera clips police discovered that he had left Thailand the same day.
This morning police found out that the suspect had returned to Thailand likely to steal again and arrested him at the airport.
Pol. Maj. Gen. Teeradej Thamsulee, commander of Metropolitan Police’s investigation unit, urged jewellery shop owners to be careful of well-dressed customers who could be thieves in disguise and steal the moment the shopkeeper is not paying attention. They should check their ID cards and passports, and above all install CCTV.
