OVER 1,000 TONNES OF SMUGGLED meats have been found at 14 cold storages so far, said Agriculture & Cooperatives Minister Thammanat Prompao today (Nov.24).

The authorities had inspected an estimated 5,300 cold storages for meats in all parts of the country under stepped-up measures against the smuggling and illegal trading of meats in domestic markets.

Of that total of the examined cold storages, 14 have evidently contained a combined volume of 1,129 tonnes of smuggled meats, including 410 tonnes of poultry meats, 380 tonnes of beef and 338 tonnes of pork, according to the agriculture & cooperatives minister.

The smuggled meats have been confiscated alongside another 2,568 tonnes of illegally-processed meats in accordance with the livestock pandemics and slaughterhouse control laws.

Those who may have been involved in the smuggling of meats and trading of them could be subject to a maximum of two years in jail or a maximum of 200,000 baht in fine or both.

Thammanat confirmed that government officials including those of the Livestock Department, Fisheries Department and Internal Trade Department will continue to crack down on the smuggling of meats.
