By Thai Newsroom Reporters

A PHUKET Facebook user called for help from local authorities and the island’s MPs in clearing a huge pile up of as much as 100 tons of garbage in the middle of a community that is harming human health, the environment and the image of world-renowned tourist destination.

The Facebook user who run Monsoongarbage page posted several pictures of this hazardous trash pile right next to residents’ homes.

He urged Phuket Governor Narong Woonciew who is retiring at the end of this month, Chalong municipality and the island province’s MPs Chalermpong Saengdee, Thitikan Thitipruethikul,Bencha Saengchantra and Rangsiman Rome to urgently clear the metres-deep pile of rubbish.

He found out that it is Chalong Municipality which has continuously dumped garbage at this spot and asked why the trash is not being sent to an incinerator and whether the purpose was land-filling.

“Soil and water has completely collapsed. Is the water contaminated by garbage flowing into the river and out to the sea? And how are people to live with this kind of garbage? It is seriously affecting the image of a world-class tourist city,” he wrote.

He added that the monumental amout of trash at Koh Siray, which is connected to Phuket by a small bridge and is home to around 10,000 people including sea gypsies, has now been cleared but now he has come across this one and is asking for honest answers from all those involved.

On April 29, 2019 around 40 sailors from HMS Canberra joined local volunteers in removing garbage on Koh Siray with as much as 1,017 kilos collected in 30 minutes, Phuket News said.
