THE ELECTION COMMISSION has today (Mar.21) scheduled a general election for May 14, confirmed the polling agency’s secretary-general Sawaeng Boonmee.
The May 14 election date has been set by the election commissioners today after caretaker prime minister Prayut Chan-o-cha dissolved the House of Representatives yesterday or only three days before its four-year term would otherwise have ended by schedule on the upcoming Friday.
The nationwide race to parliament will see a total of 500 partisan candidates elected as MPs, including 400 in constituency-based mode and 100 in party-listed mode.
All electoral contestants may apply to run in constituency-based mode from April 3 till April 7 and to vie in party-listed mode from April 4 till April 7.
An early polling for those who may wish to cast their ballots sooner, either within the country or without, is provided for May 7.
Major contesting parties include the Palang Pracharath which is sending party boss Prawit Wongsuwan as sole partisan candidate for prime minister, the Ruam Thai Sang Chart which is pitting Prayut as sole partisan contestant to retain power and the Pheu Thai which has reportedly planned to name a trio of partisan contestants for prime minister, including Paetongtarn Shinawatra, daughter of de facto party boss/deposed premier Thaksin Shinawatra, and real estate tycoon Settha Taweesin, known as personally close to deposed premier Yingluck Shinawatra.
Meanwhile, Move Forward leader Pita Limjaroenrat, Bhumjaithai leader Anutin Charnvirakul, Thai Liberal leader Seripisut Temiyavej, Democrat leader Jurin Laksanavisit, Thai Sang Thai leader Sudarat Keyuraphan are all running as sole partisan contender for prime minister, among others.
