Vietnam blasts Cambodia’s pricey SEA Games broadcasting rights

JUST AS the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) is gearing up to negotiate with Cambodia to reduce the US$800,000  or about 27.6 million baht price quoted for live broadcast rights of the 32nd SEA Games taking place during May 5-19, a Vietnamese news site criticized it as being far too high, Matichon newspaper said today (Mar. 15).

Beatvn pointed out in a Vietnamese-language report that US$800,000 the host of the next SEA Games wants for granting Thailand the rights to live broadcast the upcoming games is 80 times higher than what Vietnam had charged for doing so at the previous event.

The news site added that this is akin to palming off a gold plated item as real gold.

It also pointed out that in jacking up the price 80 times higher there does not seem to be a special advantage over the previous SEA Games Vietnam had hosted.

However SAT representatives confirmed they would not buy the live broadcast licence unless Cambodia reduces the price.
