Thaksin wonders if Prawit would be happy with Prayut’s possible comeback

By Thai Newsroom Reporters

FORMER PREMIER THAKSIN Shinawatra yesterday (Sept 27) said he wondered if Caretaker Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan would be truly satisfied with a possible comeback of a court-suspended Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha shortly.

During a Care Clubhouse live podcast, Thaksin said it would be unlikely for Prawit who concurrently heads the ruling Palang Pracharath Party to be very happy with the possibility of Prayut returning as head of government as of the upcoming Friday since, he said, the caretaker premier has considerably enjoyed running the country.

“How could Prawit possibly give up on the power invested upon himself with which he is virtually having fun? He is no longer wobbling around since he became caretaker prime minister.

“He might probably be able to run to work, literally, only if he himself ever becomes prime minister,” said Thaksin, also known online as Tony Woodsome.

Prawit told reporters at Government House yesterday he would be delighted with the possibility of Prayut being allowed by the Constitutional Court to prolong his rule.

Nevertheless, Thaksin said Prawit and Prayut have been at odds with each other, albeit behind the scenes, and that the former had not only been satisfied with the post of caretaker premier but quietly planned to rise to premiership if the latter’s eight-year rule maximumly provided by law is finally judged to have already ended.

The Constitutional Court is scheduled on the upcoming Friday to determine whether Prayut’s eight-year rule may already have ended since last month, given the fact that he rose to premiership in 2014 following a coup which he himself had orchestrated as army chief a few months earlier that year.

If Prayut’s rule is judged on Friday to have ended, thus automatically putting an end to the entire cabinet, the legislative branch will promptly manage to pick a new prime minister.

Though Prawit was not named a Palang Pracharath candidate for head of a post-election government in the 2019 general election, he might possibly become the next premier if those earlier named as candidates for head of government fail to grab a simple majority of votes from among the MPs and senators.
