Move to reduce quarantine to 7 days amid better outlook

THE PUBLIC Health Ministry said as the infection rate has now stabilised after escalating at the start of the new year it is being considered to reduce quarantine from 14  to seven days for those who test negative via ATK kit on the fifth or sixth day, Amarin TV said.

Dr. Kiatpoom Wongrachit, the ministry’s permanent secretary, said if quarantine is eased those allowed out after seven days of quarantine must wear a face mask all the time and avoid crowds. They would have to again undergo a test on the 10th day.

He added that the infection rate stabilised and the death rate was lower than expected because of comprehensive vaccination and the virus having weakened.

If the situation continues to improve the public warning level would be reduced from the current level 4  whereby people have to protect themselves to the maximum at all times, refrain from entering risky places and put off their journeys.

Currently, 108.5 million doses of vaccines have been administered with  51.6 million, or 76.92 percent of the population, having got their first jab, 47.2 million, or 70.32 percent, their second jab and  9.15 million, or 13.63 percent, their third.

The ministry will accelerate the third jab in the Sandbox zones to reach 50 percent of the population within one to two months.

There were 7,793 Covid cases and 18 deaths today taking the cumulative confirmed totals since the beginning of the year to 92,973 and the start of the pandemic 2,316,408.

Of today’s new batch of cases 7,523 were infected domestically while 270 foreign arrivals tested positive.

Another 5,202 patients were cured taking total recoveries since the start of the new year to 48,630 and since the start of the pandemic 2,217,124 while  77,368 patients are still undergoing treatment.

Today’s 18 fatalities raised the death toll to 21,916.
