YET another homeless man was found dead on a bench near Victory Monument this morning (July 24) amid continuing high Covid tally that reached 14,260 cases and 119 deaths in 24 hours, Sanook.com said.
A forensic doctor from Ramathibodi Hospital and Por Teck Tung rescuers found the 80-year-old man dead on the bench with his luggage beside him. A rapid test showed that he was infected with coronavirus and the area was cordoned off with his body being taken to the hospital for autopsy.
Lt. Wisit Somboon, who oversees Victory Point outdoor bazaar beneath the Victory Monument BTS Skytrain’s skywalk, said local traders had informed him this man had collapsed on the bench after drinking some water so he contacted officials to come in and check.
It is believed that this man had spent the night there before being found dead this morning, he said, adding that many homeless people hang out in this area and he had informed authorities to take action but nothing had been done so far.
The forensic doctor said a preliminary autopsy showed this man did not have any wounds on his body but was infected with coronavirus. In his bag were some medicine for high blood pressure and diabetes plus some clothes. His body was sent to the hospital for a detailed autopsy with his relatives to be informed.
Meanwhile the Public Health Ministry said this morning of the 14,260 new cases,13,605 were among the general public and 655 in prisons and detention centres.
This takes the cumulative confirmed total since the start of the pandemic to 481,967 and in the current wave that began in April 453,104.
The additional 119 deaths took the death toll to 3,939 while 7,637 more patients have recovered.
